Rachel Fontaine was easy to find at 6 am. She was the morning anchor for WRGN News. Nate watched from the green room as she completed her segment.
âHow are you holding up, Nate?â she asked the minute she walked into the room.
âStill trying to process it all.â He hugged her then held her at armâs length. âHow about you?â
Shaking her head, she sighed. âRegan is pissed, and I still canât believe it. Do you have any leads?â
âDepends on what you tell me.â
âMe? I donât know anything more than we have reported.â
âThatâs what I thought, until last night.â Nate took her elbow to guide her away from the door. âDo you remember the Chambers case?â
âDo I remember?â She chuckled. âItâs pretty hard to forget a shootout in the middle of Broad Street, Nate.â
Nate nodded. âI know. Do you remember the building we went to?â
âWith the blond hair, blue-eyed Barbie clones, yes, I remember that too. Do you think they have something to do with Alexâs death?â
âSome information came my way yesterday and two names came up. Centerville Correctional and Peaceful Reliance.â
âThe prisonsâ scam I was investigating?â
âRight. What ever happened to the third judge in that case?â
âWhew, Nate,â she cleared her throat as she glanced around. âDangerous territory.â
âWhy?â Nate did not understand her hesitation. âHey, itâs me. The one you shared this crazy case with.â
She shrugged. âItâs just that Regan made a visit to that judge last night, and as it turns out, what I stumbled into may be something bigger than we originally thought.â
Nate could not help but notice her voice lowered when she spoke. âShould we meet later to talk?â
âLook, Nate. Remember my father was Chief Judge over the region and those judges fell under his jurisdiction. I canât say for certain, but I believe he turned it over to the DOJ.â
Nate raised an eyebrow. âI know he did. Any idea who he would have contacted there?â
âAssistant AG Haskell, of course.â
âOf course,â Nate nodded.
âYou know all you have to do is ask your mother. She will have him in Richmond before the day is out to answer any questions you may have.â
Nate grimaced. âMy mother?â
âYes, your mother,â Rachel nodded.
âI have no idea what my mother would have to do with Haskell, but Iâd rather not get her involved in a case Iâm working on.â
âTell me what you have.â Rachel nodded in understanding.
âTell a reporter what I have on a case,â Nate chuckled then kissed her cheek. âYou gave me what I needed, but that was a good try.â He walked towards the door.
âYou canât blame a girl for trying.â Rachel smiled. âBut why not ask Chief Williams? He and Alex continued doing some work on that case after the murder investigation was closed.â
Nate stopped then turned back to her. âHow do you know that?â
âHe met with Regan a few times, trying to get a line on the girls.â She walked over to him then whispered. âRegan believes this may have something to do with White supremacy.â
âI donât think she is far off, but whatâs her reasoning?â
Rachel glanced around.
